Types of Neurotoxin Injections

Neurotoxins are prescription medicines that are injected into muscles to improve the look of moderate to severe facial lines in adults. There are different types of Neurotoxin injections so it's important that a professional listens to your concerns and helps you make an informed decision on which will benefit you the most.

Dysport

Dysport is an injectable that relaxes muscles similar to that of BOTOX®. Due to repeated movement or different muscle contractions, fine lines and wrinkles form on the face. Dysport® is a type of Neurotoxin injection that can help treat prominent wrinkles. While wrinkles can develop at any age, they can significantly change how you look.

 

Most patients see improvements in just a few days after their injections. Results will last for about three to four months.

How Does Dysport® Work?

Similar to the other neurotoxins, the active ingredient in Dysport® is botulinum toxin Type A, a muscle blocker that stops nerve muscle activity. It prevents the nerve from sending signals to muscles whenever someone talks, laughs, chews, or smiles. These injections help to relax the muscles reducing the fine lines and wrinkles. 

How Dysport Injections Are Performed

After a consultation the treatment areas are thoroughly cleansed. Next, the injections are administered in the desired treatment areas. After treatment, you can immediately return to your daily life. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least one full day.

Xeomin®

3. This smart toxin uses a double-filtered formula to remove extra proteins to minimize frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as the 11s. These lines form when the muscle under the skin contracts leading to deep lines on the face. Over time, as the skin ages, this creates frown lines. Neurotoxins like Xeomin® are prescription medications that block the release of chemicals that cause these contractions. It uses a state-of-the-art manufacturing process known as XTRACT Technology that helps accelerate results, as early as one day after treatment.

What to Expect With Xeomin® Injections

A Xeomin® injection can be given in more than one treatment area at a time. For maintenance, Xeomin® injections should be spaced at least 12 weeks apart. After you have repeated injections, it may take less and less time for symptoms to return, especially if your body develops antibodies to botulinum toxin.

Who Should Not Use It?

There are many instances when it isn’t safe to use neurotoxins including:

  • If you’re allergic to botulinum toxin

  • If you have an active infection

  • If you’re experiencing muscle weakness

  • If you have a seizure disorder

  • If you have a history of bleeding problems

  • If you have heart disease

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • If you’ve had recent surgery on your face or your eyes

Differences Between BOTOX®, Xeomin® and Dysport®

What are the differences?

  1. Results: While Dysport® gives quick results, usually within a few days, BOTOX® injections take five to seven days to see improvements.

  2. Concentration: Dysport® is more diluted than BOTOX® as it uses smaller protein molecules for muscle relaxation. This means they are less likely to break down by antibodies. This leads to more desirable results. It is also recommended for treating large areas of the body because it does spread so quickly.

What Areas Can Be Treated With These Injectables?

Crows Feet, Frown lines, Glabellar lines (11's), Forehead lines, Lips, Chin, Platysmal Bands (Neck lines), excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis), and Masseters (Jaw pain)

What Can I Expect During My Appointment?

These injections take about 10-15 minutes, depending on the area treated. We use a very small needle to inject and no anesthesia is required.

What Can I Expect After?

After your appointment, you may have minimal bruising, however some clients do not experience any. Others have experienced mild redness or swelling, which should subside. You may notice improvements in fine lines and wrinkles within minutes, but the most improve in a few days. A mild headache is also normal.

Improvements will be noticeable in 3-5 days post injection. These improvements typically last approximately 3-4 months depending on the areas treated. Touch-up treatments can be scheduled to help you to maintain your results.
